This Syrah comes from the Black Barn’s home vineyard in Havelock North sub-region. Relatively mature vines that were planted in 2001. The local soil has deep loam with clay mix, some ancient glacial sediments are also in the mix.
The fruit had been hand harvested, well selected in the field. Before going into the tank, all bunches are fully destemmed, avoid any stalk inflluence during fermentation and maceration. The maceration uses cap method, to avoid over-extration. Full malolactic fermentation took place before oak ageing.
Oak age for 8 months in both new and seasoned oak, a portion are aged with fine lee.
