De Bortoli Wines was established by Vittorio De Bortoli, a native Venetian came from the small commune of Castelcucco. He settled in New South Wales in 1924. By 1928, he managed to make some Shiraz wines from unwanted fruits, and started the brand. His son Deen De Bortoli did his own winemaking since 15 years old, and expanded the business rapidly in 1950s by modernising the winery. And the style of noble Semillon known today, had been created in 1982 by 3rd generation winemaker Darren De Bortoli.
The Semillon fruits came from selected growers that have produced Botrytis Semillon especially for De Bortoli Wines for many years in various parts of Riverina wine region. Riverina’s location is relatively inland, usually the growing season would experience a warm dry summer, sometimes prolong into the autumn. The Botrytis doesn’t appear until after rains in early May. Due to the influence from the river, some of these vineyards would have foggy mornings and further showers of rain enabled the Botrytis to spread throughout the dedicated vineyards and harvest kicked off in late May.
Harvest of these Botrytise influenced Semillon are amongst the latest in entire Australia. The wine is vinified locally in the hands of winemaker Julie Mortlock.
The wine is highly reputable for its outstanding quality, in recent years, it has picked up 6 trophies in competitions, and countless double gold, gold and silver medals. The trophies include the followings:
